Congratulations to Sam Bawden who won the I.S.K.A.Thai-Boxing English title on Saturday night in Wolverhampton (14.7.07.). Sam's had to miss a lot of training for this fight due to his exams at University. He fought magnificently against Sai Varley's boy from Derby, who has just come back from training in Thailand and proved to be very strong and tough.
The fight was VERY close and went all five rounds, Sam was rocked a couple of times by Alex from Derby but the Judges gave it unanimously to Sam at the final bell.
I am especially happy for Sam as he is leaving us in August to study Law in Essex. Although I am very sad to see him go, I'm sure this experience will stay with him forever as a wonderful memory until he returns in 2009. We all wish him chok dee and happiness down south, we'll miss him immensely, his dry humour and great ability to teach. Love to Sam from Mick, KruTrix, KruPete, KruDaz, KruWestley, KruChristian, KruLee, KruAli, KruHelene, KruDaniel, KruPaul, KruImran, and all the hundred's of students at Wicker Camp. I await your return. Mick.

Yeah, will be a real shame to lose you. Really happy you managed the title before you left mate. Gonna be difficult finding an instructor that will be as understanding as you regarding my lack of fitness and constant moaning! lol.
Also, Sam got engaged recently to the lovely Gemma, so, a pretty good year for the man.
Chokdee fella!

Thanks for your comments Alix. I think the respect that we can show to our opponents is one of the many beautiful things about Muay Thai. You were a strong opponent and yeah you've definitely left me with a few aches and pains to remember you by! I agree it was a really close fight and you definitely made me work for it. Really looking forward to watching it back and wincing at some of the knees we both took! Good luck to you too mate, it was an honour to fight you.
Thanks to Mick, Trix and absolutely EVERYONE at Wicker for your support and for everything you've done for me over the last 9 years. Particular thanks go to Pete for giving up his saturday night with the lads, Imran for helping in the corner and to H and everyone else who's been there to hold pads for me, spot me in the weights room, run with me, spar with me etc etc. Special thanks to everyone who drove halfway across the country and sat through a whole night of kickboxing just to show their support for me too!!!
The gym's become such an enourmous part of my life and words can't really do justice to how much love and respect I've got for you all... I'll miss you all unbelievably but I'm hoping that I won't become a stranger. Wicker Camp's given me so much over the years and has in so many ways shaped the person that I am today. That's something that'll never leave me, regardless of where I am.
Having received so much from Mick and everyone else at Wicker Camp I'm finding it really really hard to leave. I know Mick won't see it like this but I feel I've got a very big debt to repay! I would love to one day be in a position to give as much back as I have received from you all.
I'm sure I'm not the only fighter who loves Mick and Trix almost like parents... and for that matter views other people in the gym like their brothers and sisters.
I can't express how proud I am to have fought and taught for Wicker Camp. To wear the monkon, the shorts, the kruang ruangs, etc that have been worn by such inspiring and talented fighters is an honour and to have now become one of your many champions is something that'll always be incredibly special to me.
Much love to you all!
Sam
Hi Sam,
I doubt you will remember me as we only met once but I will certainly remember you! as you were the instructor for my first ever lesson at Wicker Camp. I arrived from Manchester with my mate Dom at around 8.35 PM thinking we were 5 mins late, when in fact the lesson had begun at 8 PM!!!! At many other martial arts clubs, we were have been treated very badly for turning up so late (and wanting to join the class) but Mick had told you that we were coming and you were very nice and got us warmed up on the tyres etc. We both loved the class and the atmosphere and hope to be training at Wicker Camp for many years to come. Good luck with your degree course. Riaz.
I'd just like to say all the best to Sam and good luck in his new endeavors.
I can truly say he's one of the most pleasant and nicest people I've ever met at the Gym (as long as your not in the ring with him!)
He'll be greatly missed.

well done to sam for his win the other week. i was over the moon with the result and even though it was a kick boxing show i wouldn't have missed it, i'd have paid the entrance fee just to watch your fight.
What a way to bow out and in my book the the only way.
I'm gunna really miss you sam and i don't know what i'm gunna do without my number one padman. It's been a pleasure to train with you and share the experiences we've had at our beloved wicker camp.
I wish you all the best for the future sam and you will always be one of my favourite people. love you always H
